Being able to compose is so much more than the actual composition itself. If one is not able to read and understand behind what is written, the person lacks a very basic understanding of the rhetorical process. This lack of knowledge will then, most likely, appropriate itself in his/her writing. I strive to avoid this by having a very rounded, cyclical process of learning/reading, and producing.
